Local Competitions

Local Competitions allow you to score flights for a task created or uploaded by you. When creating a task you have the option to "host as local competition" which lets you select a day or airport for which you want to score the task.

You don't need a subscription to get your flight scored on a local competition, only the person creating the competition needs to have a subscription.

Scoring flights

You can create a local competition by adding a scoring option when creating a task. For AATs, you can also add a minimum Time.

Local Competitions

If you select "day", all flights uploaded to WeGlide from the selected day will be scored. If you select "airport", all flights ever started from that airport will be scored on the task. Only flights that achieved the task will be shown in the results. Declaration of the task by pilots is not needed.

To see the results for your local competition, save the task and select "Competition" right below the task name.

Competition results

Results from all local competitions can be explored by selecting "Task" in the main navigation and then "Competitions" with the toggle in the lower right corner.

When clicking on one of the displayed competitions, you'll see all flight that achieved this task, with the with their accomplished score.

The score shown can be switched between "Classic", "Competition" and "Grand Prix", accompanied by other statistics like speed, distance and duration.

The competition participants can be filtered by the known parameters. This allows for creating e.g. daily lists on a long running airport competition or compete inside a glider class or club.

Hovering over a flight in the list displays a preview of the flight trace on the map with the task geometry. Clicking redirects to the flight with in-depth analysis and highlighted local competition task.

Scoring one day

If you host a local competition you can score individual days and see who performed best. Check out this day from the Australian Nationals:

Optionally, a start time can be set for accurate Grand Prix scoring. If you do not need this, leave it at 00:00.

You can also use this feature to score all flights from one airfield on a particular task over a long period of time. This is perfect for hosting a club competition. Check out the Matterhorn Challenge

Statistics

You can use the button in the lower right to switch to the statistics list. Or just search for the competition name in the normal flight list. You can then view all the statistics regarding a competition day and compare the performances of different pilots.

Use case

The flexible scoring on different task types in combination with the filters allows for a multitude of possibilities.

  • Declare a task and fly against your buddies on a single day for training purposes
  • Compete on your famous local club task and become the seasonal winner in your glider class
  • Wait for a good day and try your hands on a task set by professionals without pressure
  • Call the clubs in your region and imagine a new local competition together

Note: This can be used for all kinds of local competitions without big ambitions. If you want to fly an advanced competition with penalty points, start- and endpoint heights etc. this is not the right tool for you.

Points calculation

Points can be calculated with three different methods. In the task ranking, you can choose which ones are displayed:

  • Competition (similar to central competitions, index is used in the calculation)
  • Grand Prix (similar to central Grand Prix)
  • Classic (like all other WeGlide competitions, speed is weighed with index)

Minimum distance

When creating a local competition, please be aware that the minimum distance is 50km for all task kinds and 100km for AATs. Also, there must be at least three turn points (two legs).

Proving Grounds

If you club is not only interested in planning and scoring tasks online, but wants to receive task sheets (laminated and loose), ranking boards, magnetic slips and a holder for the task sheets, Proving Grounds could be a good option for you.
